Robes
Artist Pierre Estoppey took his inspiration from Etienne Marcel, 14th century provost of the merchants of Paris, in his designs for the robes of the Confrérie du Guillon's Councilors. For the Confrérie's inaugural meeting on July 9, 1954 at Château de Glérolles, the seven members of the Small, or Executive, Council wore red robes while half of the 14 members of the Grand Council wore yellow and the other half brown robes.
The colors were meant to evoke the autumnal hues of a vineyard during the harvest season. The robes themselves stayed pretty much unchanged for over half a century.
In their choice of colors, however, the Confrérie's Governors have provided a bit of variety. Robert Anken, André Perey and Louis Ormond gave us a “green period". Philippe Gex and the present Governor, Jean-Claude Vaucher, a "blue period" - cobalt in Gex's case, navy in Vaucher's.
And today, red is no longer the prerogative of members of the Small Council: all Councilors are outfitted in yellow, brown or red.
Constable and Lieutenant-Governor wear blue the same shade as the Governor's robes.
The prefects of Confrérie chapters known as cotterds wear brown robes with yellow and violet surplices.
